Hair Loss After Delivery – Postpartum Hair Loss

Hair Loss After Delivery – Postpartum Hair Loss

It’s the dream of most women, to give birth to their own child. But did you know that after the delivery, a woman may tend to lose their hair?

When I told that I’m developing a blog on hair loss, many female relatives with babies told me that they lost hair after the delivery and asked me why is it happening. Well I’m not a doctor, but the research information that I have gathered says that, it is completely normal and natural to experience hair loss roughly after three months following the delivery. This is mainly due to the imbalance in hormones like estrogen in a woman’s body which happens during the pregnancy period.

Let me give you some insight on why you lose hair after the delivery

Does hair grow during pregnancy (before delivery)

Did you know that during the pregnancy, a pregnant mother should actually have a fully grown luxurious hair?

Yes, during the pregnancy period, a pregnant woman will be endowed to a fully grown, strong hair, if the stress and the nutrition is handled properly.

why does hair grow during pregnancy

So how is it possible? The experts point out that, during the pregnancy period, there will be a rise in estrogen hormone [1] [2].

Estrogen will stimulate the hair to be on the growth phase [3]. This will disrupt the hair cycle, and prevent the hair from going in to the falling phase [4].

As a result, when there is an abundance in estrogen in the system, the hair will keep on growing or will be at the resting phase instead of falling off.

Why does hair fall after pregnancy

As I mentioned before, during the pregnancy period there will be a rise in estrogen. This will affect the normal hair cycle. As a result, instead of going in to the falling phase, most of the hair will stay in the growing phase and keeps on growing.

However, this hormonal imbalance should balance out naturally. This balancing process normally occurs roughly after 3 months following the delivery. This is also known as postpartum hair loss.

When the estrogen level comes back to normal, the hair cycle would also return back to its normal phase. For this process to happen, the hair which were at the growing phase should go to the resting phase and fall off. The normal hair loss which was supposed to happen during the pregnancy, will fall off at once.

This is the reason why most women experience increased amount of hair fall after 3 or 4 months following the delivery. Further, experts point out that this phase will continue and return back to normal in 6 to 12 months after the delivery.

Is hair loss after pregnancy temporary

Hair loss after the delivery mainly occurs due to a hormone imbalance. The experts technically consider this as a hair fall rather than a hair loss. Because, it is not a loss actually but rather a fall off of hair which was supposed to happen but didn’t, due to the surplus of estrogen during the pregnancy.

The experts point out that hormones will return back to normal with time and the hair will grow as usual. Therefore the expert opinion is that hair loss due to pregnancy is temporary.

Does hair loss after pregnancy happen to everyone

Postpartum hair loss (hair loss after pregnancy) is a natural and a common process which occurs due to hormone imbalances. However, the experts point out that not everyone faces hair loss after the delivery. If a pregnant mother owns a fully grown luxurious hair during the pregnancy period, then she will face hair loss after the delivery

The experts further point out that while some women do not face postpartum hair loss at all, some women will experience hair loss after a year following the delivery. However, the experts’ opinion is that, most pregnant women will experience hair loss after the delivery

How much hair loss is to be expected per day after the delivery

We as humans lose about 50 to 100 hair strands every day. This is considered to be completely normal and natural. However, after the delivery, there will be an increased amount of hair strands falling out per day.

The experts point out that it is not possible to say the exact amount of hair fall per day. But it can be in the range of 150 and can go up to like 300 hair strands per day, in a worst case scenario.

As a result of excess hair falling, the scalp may become visible to the outside in certain parts of the head. The scalp may become visible in the crown area and on top of the head just above the forehead.

What helps to minimize hair loss after pregnancy

When you lose hair after the delivery, do not freak out. It’s completely natural. However if you want to prevent over falling of hair, it is always better to seek the advice from a doctor. Your doctor is the best option to ensure that the hormones are in proper balance. Especially since the medication or treatments you take can affect your child too.

Having said that, I can give you some advice, which many experts point out, so that you can minimize the hair fall at home.

  1. Make your hair shorter

This is a common practice of many pregnant mothers after the delivery. Making your hair shorter will not minimize the hair fall but it has helped many pregnant mothers to have a sense of control over the hair. This makes it easy for them to treat the hair and maintain it accordingly with a busy schedule and the baby.

  1. Have a nutrition dense, balanced diet

Including food rich in quality nutrition in your meals is a must when you have a baby. The nutrition is important to keep your hair healthy, and to grow new hair. You must include various kinds of fruits and vegetables which are rich in vitamins and minerals.

Furthermore, make sure to consume foods which are rich in iron and protein too. This is since vitamins, minerals, iron and protein are important to keep your hair and skin healthy.

  1. Be careful with wet hair

The wet hair is much weaker than you think. Therefore when you shower, be mindful to dry it smoothly with a towel, and avoid combing the wet hair.

  1. Avoid pony tails, braids, and cornrows

The hair styles which pulls your hair back can have a huge impact on your hair. Especially since the hair is prone to fall much more easily, after the delivery. These hairstyles will cause more hair fall than usual.

  1. Be careful when using heat styling instruments

I have emphasized the damage that heat styling instruments like flat irons and hair dryers can do to your hair. These equipment can cause more hair fall after the delivery. Therefore, if you are using heat styling instruments, then make sure to reduce the heat, and minimize the duration of usage.

  1. Treat your hair with vitamin E

There are vitamin E capsules available in the market. Extract the vitamin E from the capsule and apply it externally on the scalp. This will help to repair the damage caused to hair follicles and promote hair growth.

Furthermore, vitamin E will help to nourish your scalp and your hair moisturized and healthy.

When to see a doctor

Technically the hair loss will go on for about one year after the delivery. So if the hair loss continues after one year, then it is advisable to contact your doctor.

However, if you have a doubt that you are having doubt that you are having more hair fall than usual, then stop worrying and consult your doctor. Because, as I have said before, your doctor is the best option to give you professional medical advice.
